I bet you dreamed about another “5 Ways to Build Bigger Arms” or “7 Foods You Need to Avoid” piece, but I’m not going to indulge you. Instead, I’ll tell you a story about what really makes a difference in your life. I’ll expose the biggest secret that distinguishes weak always-whining people from badass mofos you adore. And this secret is called “perseverance”.
As far as I know, a lot of people to the West believe that we have secret training methodologies here in Eastern Europe. It is understandable. “The Iron Curtain” provoked this type of thinking and it was successfully sustained by clever marketers. Sometimes it seems that western people think that trainees here can gain strength and build muscle with the power of their sheer thought (how awesome would that be?).
Well, I don’t want to disappoint you, but most of the stuff you hear or read that is tagged “Soviet” and “Top Secret” is just a hype. All the info you need to succeed in your strength training quest is already out there. I am sorry to burst your bubble, but there is no East European training conspiracy. Oftentimes when we start any endeavor, it is really fun at first (well, unless someone makes you do it). You are all over the place with all kinds of ideas. You can’t wait to improve what you are doing. You are obsessed. But time goes, you are getting better, more mature and seasoned, and once interesting affair becomes dull and monotonous.
This is true for a lot of things including strength training and nutrition. You are not progressing that fast in strength with time. Constant hunger and cravings can break even the strongest dieter. Discipline, hard work, and consistency – these things will make difference once the journey gets into the intermediate-advanced stage. With the rise of the internet and social networks, it seems that almost everybody has one or a couple of New Year’s resolutions nowadays. While it is definitely a right thing to do, a lot of those resolutions result in failures. People that promised themselves to lose weight/stop smoking/quit drinking break their vows in fucking January! Of course, they do not even try to get back on track in further months because they “tried everything” (in reality trying nothing). Obviously, it is not the way New Year’s resolutions meant to work. Lots of people requested an article on Rough Strength mindset for a long time. It is quite interesting fact, because I don’t consider myself the most confident man out there. Far from that. I may appear tough, but inside it is not that simple. I still have that nervousness when I approach complete strangers, even after a job, where I met LOTS of new people daily (it made its impact though, I’m WAY less nervous). I know that haters are going to hate, but I still get somewhat frustrated and pissed off when my work is misunderstood for some reason. Reject still leaves bitter taste. It is still hard to cope with bad days. I still have doubts every day about literally everything. I think these feelings are essential for every person. Only ignorant and stupid people never felt this way. On the other hand, the feeling of success and creation kicks ass of any doubt and frustration easily and really hard. It is that unstoppable energy that fuels you to move forward.
All in all, confidence is always work in progress and the wall of mental toughness improves brick by brick. In this article I will try to help you with what I know works for me.

6. If you hit plateau, change something.
There is no point in doing something again and again if you see no results. You will hit plateau in all exercises sooner or later. If you never experienced this, then you either not consistent enough, or at beginner stage where you can progress for several months in a row without changing a thing.
There’s nothing wrong with hitting plateau, except the frustration. It is essential part of the process for strength training (as well as any other area of life). Your body adapts to the stimulus and regimen stops working. Despite what other people say, you need variety. Your body demands it. Sometimes it takes only one tip from another person (usually the person with well-developed common sense) to turn on the switch in your head. Have you ever been in such situation? You struggle to find the best solution to your problem, you read all the available literature, you make your head aching bad (notice the intentional Breaking Bad analogy), your eyes fall out of sockets, but everything in vain. Suddenly it takes only one word from the right person and everything gets into its right place in your head.
Just like with this article. I was analyzing all possible ways to make my own weighted vest filled with sand, while simultaneously driving myself crazy with all the ideas. Then in one conversation on this subject my friend told me the simplest thing: “Hey! Why don’t you take the backpack?” I was like: “But it won’t work for this and that”. However, a bit later I came to conclusion that backpack will do the trick for almost every exercise that I need. Read the article for more details.
